There are many different types of health insurance plans, but HMO and PPO plans tend to dominate the market. What are HMO and PPO plans and is one type of health insurance plan superior to the other?
HMO Health Insurance
An HMO is a health maintenance organization. If you are concerned about the affordability of health insurance, HMOs are among the most inexpensive forms of health insurance available. HMO health insurance plans have very low copays, typically no more than $25 in most instances. HMOs focus on wellness and preventative care which is a cost-effective way to keep healthcare costs low. When you think about, detecting a disease earlier means less invasive and expensive treatment. Eating well and other simple measures can prevent very devastating diseases. Not to mention save money on prescriptions and other treatments. The downside to HMOs are that policyholders are limited to doctors within the network and must have approval from a primary care physician to see a specialist. Health maintenance organizations do not cover physicians operating outside of the network whatsoever. One hundred percent of the cost will fall upon you if you choose to see a doctor outside of the network.
PPO Health Insurance
A PPO is a preferred provider organization. It has fairly reasonable and affordable copays, but not quite as low as an HMO. A PPO allows you more flexibility in choosing doctors and you can see a specialist without a doctor referral. PPO plans may cover out of network doctors but a much greater out of pocket expense than if you were to see someone within the network. For all of this flexibility and choice, expect to pay more than an HMO. If you see doctors frequently or don’t like having to go through red tape to see a specialist, you may not mind the additional cost of a preferred provider organization.
